On August 3rd of the year 79, Mount Vesuvius near Pompeii, Italy, begins to erupt; within the next 25 hours, it wipes out the entire town in one of the most catastrophic and famous eruptions in European history. Mount Vesuvius spawned a deadly cloud of volcanic gas, stones, ash and fumes to a height of 33 km (20.5 miles), spewing molten rock and pulverized pumice at the rate of 1.5 million tons per second.
The towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum were obliterated and buried underneath massive pyroclastic flows. An estimated 16,000 people died from the eruption. It was not until 1595, during the construction of an aqueduct, that Pompeii was rediscovered, perfectly preserved by the volcano’s ash. [x]
